The best on motivation and learning

Alite 2002 took place on 21 June at the Café Royal, London.

England's Quarter Final match against Brazil added an extra dimension to the day, as delegates arrived early to watch the drama unfold on the big screen. After the disappointment of England's 2-1 defeat, Alistair Smith had the unenviable task of launching a day about motivation and learning.

Alistair managed to lift the mood, and to kick off a day that was packed with humour, invaluable exchanges of ideas and expertise, and which left participants 'buzzing'.

Drawing on years of intensive research for his new book, The Brain's Behind It, Alistair revealed what brain science tells us about motivation and learning.

Outstanding practitioners from schools and local authorities from around the UK then presented their work in a unique learning forum.

Bill Lucas, Director of the Campaign for Learning drew from his book 'Power Up Your Mind' and shared his personal perspective on motivation and learning.

After another opportunity for participants to hear from the case study practitioners, Tanni Grey-Thompson captivated the audience as she revealed how she has motivated herself to become a world-class athlete. Her often hilarious speech left delegates determined to 'aim high, even if you hit a cabbage'.

Howard Kennedy, Managing Director of the London Leadership Centre, had the challenging task of (a) following Tanni and (b) a post-lunch presentation time. Howard rose to the occasion and kept the audience enthralled as he drew on a combination of his own experience and the latest evidence from around the world on how to motivate and provide learning leadership in a complex organisation like a school. As well as provoking plenty of thought, Howard's presentation raised laughs, and some of his anecdotes left delegates with a lump in the throat.

The day was rounded off with a last visit to the case study practitioners, whose work was variously described as 'inspirational', 'truly impressive' and 'thoroughly thought-provoking'.

An overview of the work of the case study practitioners, together with the keynote speeches, has been summarised in a conference book, The Best on Motivation and Learning. Practitioners tell their own story of how they have changed teaching and learning for the better in their school or authority.
