The Presenters
Alistair Smith has been described as "the UK's leading trainer in modern learning methods". He is a trainer, author and consultant. An outstanding presenter and motivational speaker, Alistair travels throughout the world delivering training based on his best-selling books and interactive programmes.
After both a chequered school experience and a career which included working in construction, quarrying, museums and the Prison’s Service, Alistair taught in schools in England. He worked with the Advisory Service in a large Local Education Authority before setting up his company ALITE. More recently, he has written award winning books, featured on radio and television programmes, and spoken to over 100,000 educators, parents and developers at conferences throughout the UK and abroad.
Alistair’s highly respected award winning Accelerated Learning model has been used in classrooms as a means of raising pupil motivation and achievement. His 2001 book The Brains Behind It, was one of the first in the UK to look at translating brain research for teachers.
Alistair originated and co-authored the L2 suite of products. L2 is an innovative Learning to Learn approach designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes of the outstanding learner. Over half a million students now have access to this approach.
Alistair Smith also has a dual career in professional sport. He is the designated learning consultant to the English Football Association where, on behalf of their 50,000 students, he helps modernise training and coaching provision. He has delivered on the FA’s prestigious UEFA Pro Licence course since its inception, working with over one hundred managers at the top levels of the professional game. He also works with European managers and coaches on behalf of UEFA.
Mark Lovatt is Deputy Headteacher at Cramlington Community High School, a highly successful 13 – 18 Comprehensive school of nearly 1600 students in Northumberland. It became a specialist Science College in September 2002 and was awarded “leading edge” status in 2003. The School has a national reputation for innovation in Teaching and Learning and increasingly for combining ICT with Teaching and Learning.
For a number of years Cramlington has run a timetabled Learning to Learn course of its own devising for all year 9 students. The course occupies 7 hours of curriculum time per fortnight – the equivalent to time given for Maths, English, and Science. The course is housed in its own purpose built learning environment in rooms designed to meet the needs of 21 st Century learners and to offer enough flexibility to accommodate a variety of teaching and learning strategies. A trained team of 14 staff supported by specialist teachers of ICT deliver the course to 400 year 9 students.
"Mark employs strategies in the training course that he would also use in the classroom - we can directly appreciate how these techniques would work in practice"
