L2 Masterclass

18TH–20TH JULY 2008 – Daventry, Northampton

Forty teachers from twenty seven schools attended Alite’s first L2 Masterclass at Staverton Park in Daventry from 18 – 20 July this year. The schools were made up of those who were already delivering L2 and were there to build on their experience and skills, along with schools who were using L2 for the first time in the 2008-9 and were anxious to gain insight, knowledge and practical skills from Alite’s experienced trainers and practitioners.

After a welcome from Alistair Smith, the weekend began with a needs and offers exercise where schools identified what they needed from the Masterclass and what they could offer in terms of skills and experience to others. Mark Lovatt and Kenny Brechin from Cramlington Learning Village then modelled the first five lessons from the revised L2 Phase 1 allowing participants to experience and use the resources as well as discuss how they could be used most effectively in the classroom.

Saturday’s programme began with a problem page exercise where participants worked in teams on answering common L2 issues and concerns from schools and then went on to cover the future of the web based L2,  support for schools in using L2 and practical classroom skills for effective teachers of L2.

Graham Quince, one of Cramlington Learning Village’s web designers looked at the use of ICT in the delivering L2 in the afternoon and introduced participants to skills of podcasting. These skills were invaluable for the participants task of creating a podcast to support the introduction and aspects of the delivery of L2 in schools. Participants worked in teams to plan, write and take part in the podcasts and then filmed then on the Sunday morning.

The Masterclass ended with all present viewing the different podcasts and at times squirming with embarrassment!

All who took part in the Masterclass were positive and enthusiatic about the weekend believing it very much had met their L2 needs. Watch out for the L2 Masterclass run by Alite next year!!
