Nick Austin

Nick Austin has a passion for Accelerated Learning, having used the techniques to great effect in the junior school where he was Headteacher for 7 years. He specialises in working with primary and middle schools, and with junior schools in the independent sector.

Nick was educated in the private sector, and started his teaching career in boys' Prep. schools, both in this country and in New Zealand. He was trained at Matlock College in Derbyshire, and began his state career in a large 8 - 12 middle school in Surrey.

He became deputy head and then headteacher of a successful Church of England school which started as a middle school and then turned junior in 1994, with 340 children. He steered the school through a successful Ofsted inspection, and navigated through the initiative-led 1990s with literacy, numeracy and all the pressures of SATs and school targets. In 2000 he took the school through the Investors in People award.

While working on his MA(Ed) with University College, Chichester, Nick met Alistair Smith and became involved with Accelerated Learning for the first time. This became the focus for his dissertation and, convinced of the benefits of the AL approach, Nick directed his energies into ensuring the methods were adopted in the classroom. At every opportunity he used Accelerated Learning strategies to improve learning and teaching in school.

Nick has been involved in LEA curriculum development groups, and has run seminars for Surrey's consultancy team. He is an external adviser for governors in performance management with CEA.

Nick is passionate about Accelerated Learning and brain friendly classroom strategies, and relishes the opportunity to spread the word through his work with Alite. He brings boundless enthusiasm and energy to his role, as well as a wealth of knowledge gained academically and in over 20 years of in-school practice (he claims he started very young!). These factors combine to ensure that his courses are lively and engaging, strongly rooted in Accelerated Learning theory, and backed up with a wealth of personal experience.
