Mark Lovatt

Mark Lovatt is Deputy Headteacher at Cramlington Community High School, a highly successful 13 -18 Comprehensive school of nearly 1600 students in Northumberland. It became a specialist Science College in September 2002 and was awarded 'leading edge' status in 2003. The School has a national reputation for innovation in Teaching and Learning and increasingly for combining ICT with Teaching and Learning. In a recent Ofsted inspection the school was described as “outstanding” and inspectors remarked that “learning was done with the students and not to them”.

For a number of years Cramlington has run a timetabled Learning to Learn course of its own for all year 9 students. The course occupies 7 hours of curriculum time per fortnight - the equivalent to time given for Maths, English, and Science. The course is housed in its own purpose built learning environment in rooms designed to meet the needs of 21st Century learners and to offer enough flexibility to accommodate a variety of teaching and learning strategies. A trained team of 14 staff supported by Specialist teachers of ICT deliver the course to 400 year 9 students. This year the first cohort of students to go through the Learn to Learn course took their GCSE exams and achieved the highest results (83%) the school has ever seen.
