John Turner

L2 Lead Consultant

John Turner was an Assistant Headteacher at a large secondary school in Derby for thirteen years. He was responsible for ensuring high standards of teaching and learning and for staff training and development.

John's commitment to learning to learn has taken him as far as South Australia where he studied learning to learn and thinking skills and was employed by the South Australian Government to train staff on approaches to teaching gifted children in international schools in Europe.

John has worked with his local educational authority for the past two years running courses on thinking skills and has helped many primary and secondary schools successfully incorporate learning to learn into their curriculum. Since 2006, he has been a learning consultant for both Derby City LA and Aim Higher (a programme aiming to widen participation in higher education by raising the aspirations and attainment of young people from under-represented groups).

John believes that learning to learn has a central role to play in schools both in improving student achievement and in preparing young people for the ever-changing world of work. His 26 years of teaching experience have shown him that the key to good learning to learn is a clear personalised vision, quality learning provision, enjoyment and fun!

John is a keen sportsman and will talk to you at length about a whole range of sports - if you let him! He has recently taken up playing golf but has declined to discuss his handicap!
